Cheap car insurance for young drivers

Who said it was easy being young? Whereas we may wish we were 18 again in most aspects of our lives, when it comes to driving being young is definitely not fun.

Young drivers face extraordinary car insurance costs – and with good reason. One out of every five young drivers suffers an accident within their first year of motoring and young drivers are 10 times more likely to be involved in a serious collision than experienced drivers.

However, the AA has recently called on car insurance companies to recognise the efforts being made by some youngsters to improve their driving.

How are youngsters improving their driving?

Police have recently identified young drivers – such as those with mobile phone, speeding or seatbelt offences – that they deem to be at risk and has put them forward for Drive Smart training courses.

The course involves two hours of training with a focus on improving safety, boosting fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. The course is available to anyone outside the charity’s qualifying criteria.

Taking an advanced driving course is one way to reduce the chances of being involved in an accident but it may not cut a youngster’s car insurance premiums unless they take a course improved by an insurer.

How to cut young driver’s car insurance

One of the courses recognised by the majority of car insurers is the Pass Plus. This provides six hours of additional tuition, and is typically taken immediately after a new driver successfully passes a practical driving test. It provides experience in city driving, driving at night and driving on a motorway among other aspects and with some insurers it can slash premiums by as much as 35 per cent.

Advanced driving courses aren’t the only way for youngsters to save on car insurance, however. Here are five more top tips to help a young driver save:

- Choose carefully: Pick a conventional vehicle with a small engine when buying a new car. Faster, larger cars face higher premiums.
